We are looking for an experienced attorney to join our new Digital Services Legal Team as Legal Counsel, Director. This in-house counsel position will report to the Chief Counsel for Digital Services. The Digital Services Legal Team serves as enterprise counsel for Schwab Digital Services. Digital Services is a recently formed enterprise leading innovation and accelerating Schwab’s digital transformation. It is already an industry leader in the robo advice space, with $30 billion in invested client assets. The Digital Services Legal Team is within the Institutional & Retail Legal Group of Corporate Legal Services. Corporate Legal Services provides legal advice to all aspects of Schwab's business, and the Institutional & Retail Legal Group supports all of Schwab’s client-facing businesses, including Investor Services, Advisor Services, Digital Services, and Retirement Plan Services. Schwab Digital Services
Digital Services was formed to accelerate the digital transformation of Schwab’s client-facing businesses and the operations that support them in order to lead digital disruption on behalf of investors and advisors. The organization aligns Schwab’s technology, operations, project management, data, voice and digital functions from across our two largest business lines – Investor Services and Advisor Services, to significantly advance Schwab’s digital and data capabilities to drive growth, client loyalty and operating leverage.
What you’ll do:
The primary duty of the Legal Counsel, Director will be to serve as a day-to-day counselor and provider of legal services to Digital Services. Responsibilities will include, but not be limited to:
Analyze proposed Digital Services products, services and processes and (a) advise business people and prepare briefing materials on legal, regulatory and risk issues and (b) provide needed legal services such as drafting and negotiating contracts, drafting disclosures, and reviewing and commenting on proposed new user experiences.
Collaborate with and coordinate the advice and services of subject matter expert colleagues in Corporate Legal Services as needed on applicable Digital Services matters.
The Legal Counsel, Director will also be expected to assume other assigned tasks and projects in addition to his or her regular duties and to assist other attorneys on the team as circumstances may dictate.
What you have:
Candidate must have a J.D. degree, active bar admission and at least 5 years of law firm and/or in-house counsel experience with a financial services company that includes retail investment services matters, or experience with a financial services regulator. Strong working knowledge of broker-dealer regulation (Securities Exchange Act of 1934 and FINRA rules) is required. The ideal candidate will also have background and experience with technology legal matters and fintech. We seek candidates with the following attributes: Excellent verbal and written briefing skills. Curious and innovative. Highly collaborative. Exceptionally client focused – able to quickly build relationships and establish trust, respect, and confidence. Ability to advise on complex issues in a fast-paced environment with an eye on regulatory changes and risk management.
