Our Opportunity:

Charles Schwab’s Architects thrive in a leading-edge work culture while developing products that help Schwab customers learn, explore and make life-impacting moves on their paths to achieving their goals.  The Gateway Services group within Advisor Services Technology (AST) provides external integration solutions that enable Registered Investment Advisors (RIAs) and Third parties to develop custom solutions leveraging Schwab data and processing. We are looking for a Solution Architect to provide technical leadership to Agile teams tasked with defining and delivering our strategic external integration offering, including a highly-critical external API solution. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated experience in software engineering, architecture, and large-scale delivery in a fast-paced, Agile environment and must be capable of influencing across the enterprise and partnering with Business stakeholders to drive product vision and execution.

What you’ll do:

The primary responsibility of the Technical Directory – Solution Architect is to provide technical leadership and direction to a group of Agile teams focused on delivery. The role requires a deep understanding of industry trends and working with other Architects across Schwab to align with enterprise technology strategy, best practices, and complying with all governance requirements.

This architect will be responsible for designing and implementing API solutions and strategy. They will work closely with other architects, business partners, and development teams to define, guide, and lead the strategy. In addition, they will be responsible for working with the architects across AST to define standards and best practices as well as ensure consistency and adherence to all Schwab technology standards. Some travel will be required.

What you have:

  • 10+ years of software engineering experience
  • 3+ years architecting scalable, highly-available technical solutions
  • Strong track record of technology leadership, architecting solutions, and influencing across the enterprise
  • Leadership qualities which engineers recognize and respect
  • Good judgment and the ability to handle stressful situations

Technical:

  • Expertise in API design, preferably with practical experience in delivering a robust external API solution
  • Strong understanding of API concepts including REST, SOAP, JSON, XML, HATEOAS
  • Knowledge of API Management Platforms (Apigee, Mulesoft, AWS, etc.), preferably with practical experience
  • Hands-on experience in requirement analysis, solution architecture and design, resource-based API modeling, and micro-services architecture
  • Knowledge and experience in API security standards
  • Experience with Continuous Integration/Continuous Delivery (Atlassian tool suite preferred)
  • Experience (and preference) working in an Agile environment including Test-driven Development (TDD)
  • Demonstrated track record of making technical decisions at the application and organization level (vendor/technology selection, solution architecture, assessing tradeoffs)
  • Evaluate new technologies, stay current with a broad range of industry trends
  • Experience with Architecture patterns (e.g. microservices, GoF, SOA, Event based)
  • Experience with infrastructure scaling (e.g. load distribution, SDN, horizontal, vertical)
  • Experience with Cloud Native (12-Factor) and Infrastructure Patterns
  • Experience with the 4+1 architectural view model

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with the demonstrated ability to concisely communicate ideas to a broad audience across the enterprise
  • Ability to own architecture, including its direction and present a vision for the future of the Technology platform
