Our Opportunity:

Portfolio Consulting includes Schwab Private Client Investment Advisory, Inc., Schwab Intelligent Advisory, Inc., Wealth Strategies Group, and Portfolio Solutions Group.  Schwab Private Client (“SPC”) is a premier, fee based and non-discretionary investment advisory solution providing clients with a personal relationship, specialized service and ongoing advice built on Schwab’s approach to investing. Investors looking for more guidance have access to professional advice from Schwab’s Portfolio Consultants who can help develop an investment strategy and carry out investment and portfolio management decisions, as well as a range of fully delegated managed solutions that provide ongoing portfolio management. Portfolio Consultants work for Schwab Private Client Investment Advisory, Inc. ("SPCIA"), a registered investment advisor and an affiliate of Charles Schwab & Co., Inc. Wealth Strategies Group is made up of wealth management experts in financial planning, Executive Compensation, Trust/Tax & Estate planning, and Options/Fixed Income Specialists under SPCIA. 

What you’ll do:

The Portfolio Consulting Operations Director will manage and coordinate the establishment and support of programs and/or projects of significance to the operation and administration of Portfolio Consulting to enable client-facing employees to deliver effectively on the SPCIA, SIA, and PSG relationships in partnership with Client Experience and Field Integration.  The position provides strategic leadership for the development, communication and implementation of best in class operational framework across the Portfolio Consulting delivery channels. They will also lead business risk management as well as oversee efforts in centralized project management.  The role will also provide leadership of one support role in Portfolio Consulting.  Additional responsibilities include:

  • Plans, develops, implements, and coordinates strategic operational and administrative programs, projects, and/or services of broad significance to the organization
  • Establishes and implements short- and long-range organizational goals, objectives, strategic plans, policies, and operating procedures, as appropriate to the objectives of the organization
  • Monitors and evaluates programmatic and operational effectiveness, and effects changes required for improvement
  • Determines need and plans, develops, and assesses a wide range of integrated communications strategies and programs for and on behalf of the organization
  • Provides strategic advice and consultation to leadership in the development, implementation, and evaluation of modifications and enhancements to existing operations, systems, and procedures
  • Develops and manages annual capital and/or operating budgets; oversees, monitors, and coordinates program budgets as appropriate
  • Make connections among disparate projects and initiatives in order to optimize resources and effort across Portfolio Consulting and integrate effectively
  • Strategically analyze initiatives and issues to identify straight forward solutions to complex business problems
  • Drive thought leadership to maximize the balance of client experience and operational risk
  • Promote and support a collaborative culture while navigating the environmental dynamics of a matrixed organization
  • Develop and communicate vision and strategy, and deliver results through practical, disciplined execution
  • Conduct clear, consistent, fact-based analysis to inform key business decisions
  • Drive effective internal content management and field communications; critical to the day-to-day operations of the business
  • Motivate and inspire others by aligning organizational, team and individual goals with the Portfolio Consulting and Investor Services business strategy
  • Develop talent and compose a team that is focused on advocating for client-facing channels in their pursuit of exceptional service and relationships
  • Contribute to financial results through disciplined project management and process improvement
  • Keep current with regulatory and firm policy changes and proactively identify and implement the appropriate business policy and process changes to remain compliant
  • Collaborate on key initiatives to enhance and continue to mature the operational risk program
  • Oversee the risk assessment process, risk decision-making and the oversight of risk controls implementation

 What you have:

  • 7-10 years leadership experience in a service, product management and/or operations capacity in the Financial Services industry
  • Skill in examining and re-engineering operations and procedures, formulating policy, and developing and implementing new strategies and procedures
  • Makes sound, timely decisions in a dynamic and matrixed organization, with keen attention to procedures and regulatory requirements, and in response to client and field input to address issues and opportunities
  • Excellent project management skills, including attention to detail, and the ability to handle multiple priorities simultaneously; drive to decisions and follow through with strategic execution
  • High degree of comfort dealing with ambiguity; comfort in a dynamic and fast-moving work environment
  • A strategic thinker with strong business judgment and analytical skills, who is able to problem solve as issues arise
  • Analyzes issues objectively, thinking through all potential connections and impacts and capitalizes on opportunities to operate more efficiently and improve performance
  • Thrives on initiating, building and cultivating strong relationships inside and outside; highly collaborative; navigates and activates alignment across organizational boundaries as well as the enterprise as a whole
  • Ability to analyze business needs and develop recommendations and influence partners
  • Experience consulting with all levels of management and working collaboratively with various groups with potentially disparate objectives
  • Strategic and tactical planning skills are a must along with the ability to lead others either through direct or indirect lines of management
  • Experienced at developing talent for the firm, adept at providing balanced, direct and actionable feedback to employees
  • Holds self and others accountable to the highest standards of teamwork, collaboration and production
  • Superior communication skills, both written and verbal, with demonstrated ability developing materials and effectively presenting to executive audiences
  • Strong emotional intelligence/maturity and senior level executive presence
  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • FINRA Series 7, and 9/10 (8) licenses
  • Strong preference for prior experience in the institutional brokerage industry
