What you’ll do:

This is an individual contributor role.  This position, which reports to the Senior Manager of Investment Oversight, is chiefly responsible for ensuring compliance of alternative (private fund) investments with Schwab Charitable’s policies.   We are seeking a highly motivated individual with solid investment knowledge, analytical and organizational skills, investment compliance experience and a natural inclination for attending to details.  This position will be responsible for conducting due diligence and risk review of Schwab Charitable’s alternative investments.  This position will also assist in the administration of Schwab Charitable’s alternative investments, in monitoring compliance with Schwab Charitable’s overall Investment Policy Statement and preparing investment performance reports.  This role must be able to interact skillfully with sophisticated investment advisors, clients and with multiple internal roles, including senior management.

Responsibilities include the following:

Alternative Investment (“AI”) Due Diligence Review

  • Process AI purchase/contribution recommendations from advisors
  • Collect required AI due diligence documents for each recommendation
  • Assist with initial and ongoing  AI due diligence review on proposed AIs; prepare AI Risk Assessment Reports for Senior Investment Oversight Manager review,  including the following:

1)      Review legal documents and subscription documents of proposed AIs to ensure appropriate terms & conditions, controls, accounting oversight, conflict mitigation, investor protections, regulatory oversight and risk mitigation

2)      Work with AI advisors to document/address unusual issues during due diligence review process

3)      Identify and evaluate the risk of each proposed AI

4)      Summarize the results of due diligence review, findings, and any policy/regulatory exceptions

  • Monitor and manage AI correspondence and quarterly/annual AI updates to ensure ongoing policy compliance
  • Maintain AI records - ensure files are complete, well-organized and documented for quick retrieval

 Investment Oversight and Projects:

  • Prepare quarterly/annually investment  performance and compliance reports
  • Review Investment Advisory Agreements and trade recommendations from advisors to ensure policy compliance, escalate any policy/regulatory exceptions as appropriate
  • Work with advisors directly to address compliance issues in PMA accounts
  • Manage  SEC compliance filings (currently Forms 13G and 13H)
  • Assist Senior Investment Oversight Managers in designing and documenting investment oversight procedures
  • Assist with other Investment Oversight projects as needed

AI Administration

Act as a back up to Investment Administrator in managing AI administration assignments, including, but not limited to:

  • Maintain AI database
  • Process capital calls, distributions, subscriptions, transfers and redemptions
  • Handle AI daily correspondence; complete, obtain review and signature of filing of various compliance forms (FATCA, new issue status etc.)
  • Assist in annual audit preparation, including review and filing of audited financial statements and K-1’s

 

What you have:

Required Skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Strong understanding of investment industry required
  • Strong experience in conducting investment analysis and compliance activities required
  • Strong experience with and solid understanding of investments and of investment performance reporting and analysis required
  • Strong PC skills, including proficiency in Excel spreadsheet, macro and database applications
  • Minimum 6-8 years’ experience, with at least 4 in financial services or related industry
  • Minimum of 3-5 years’ experience with investment compliance activities
  • Solid understanding of wide range of investment styles, strategies and security types
  • Experience in investment firm, consulting or advisory firm
  • Minimum of 3-5 years’ experience with investment performance reporting, analysis and monitoring

Preferred Skills:

  • CAIA, CIMA, CFA or post-graduate degree strongly preferred
  • Understanding of AI industry strongly preferred
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience working with alternatives strongly preferred
  • Experience in AI evaluation, oversight, custody or operations strongly  preferred
  • Experience in conducting initial and ongoing due diligence on investment advisors and funds, including private funds strongly preferred
  • Investment experience at a foundation preferred
  • Aptitude and passion for learning complex, new material
