Our Opportunity:

The Investor Relations Associate will provide analytical support to the VP and SVP of Investor Relations, the EVP - CFO, and other executive management with regard to developing and maintaining Schwab’s relationships with the various members of the investment community that have an interest in the firm, including institutional portfolio managers, and buy-side and sell-side equity analysts. 

This position reports to the Senior Vice President - Investor Relations and operates with a high degree of independence in terms of managing workload and interacting with other departments.  This position will interact with staff at all levels of the Finance division, as well as analytical and managerial staff from throughout the Schwab organization.  The incumbent must be equally facile in obtaining data from clerical staff and in effectively discussing complex financial issues with outside investment analysts and Schwab executives at the EVP level and above.  External contacts will include institutional portfolio managers and buy-side analysts, sell-side analysts with major securities firms, and other Investor Relations professionals.

What you’ll do:

  • Support the VP and SVP of Investor Relations as required in carrying out the unit’s stockholder targeting and relationship development efforts. 
  • Responsible for: participating in the targeting of prospective owners of SCHW; assisting current and prospective institutional owners in their research on Schwab; planning for the IR meeting schedule, including out-of-town and local meetings for the IR officers, the EVP-CFO and/or other executives to discuss Schwab with members of the investment community; planning for all aspects of the investor conferences periodically co-hosted by Schwab, including scheduling, speakers, invitations, presentation materials, logistics, etc; and helping prepare presentation materials for investor events.
  • Design, develop and maintain a set of periodic IR reports to keep Finance and executive management informed with regard to: trends in ownership of SCHW by institutional investors; Schwab’s actual and expected (by Wall Street) financial performance versus that of selected financial services firms; and trends in ownership of SCHW by various insiders, including executives, SVPs, VPs, other employees, Directors and family members.
  • Participate in the design and implementation of a survey of current institutional owners to determine strengths and weaknesses of the Company’s current disclosure practices.  Assist in the development and implementation of appropriate changes to disclosure practices based on survey results.
  • Directly accountable for the efficient, accurate and timely dissemination of management information concerning Schwab’s ownership structure and relative financial performance.  
  • Accountable for organizing and maintaining the unit’s meeting calendar to ensure the successful execution of Schwab’s ownership targeting plan, which is critical to providing continued liquidity in the firm’s $50+ billion market capitalization. 
  • Other accountabilities include identifying IR-related issues requiring resolution and recommending appropriate courses of action to senior management, developing and implementing IR programs to assist the firm in meeting its ownership targeting and share price goals, and preparing unstructured technical analyses on a wide range of IR-related issues with related recommendations.

What you have:

  • An understanding of investor relations/corporate communications principles, capital and money market instruments, corporate finance, economics, and financial institutions is required.
  • Strong analytical skills, including demonstrated ability to perform unstructured analyses relating to corporate financial engineering, operating structures, or relative financial performance. 
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills. 
  • Demonstrated ability to create computer-based models, reports, databases, etc. 
  • Ability to work through projects independently.
  • A degree in Business/Finance/Economics is required. 
  • Three-plus years overall work experience.  Graduate degree, internships or relevant extra-curricular activities may substitute for some work experience. 
  • MBA in Finance preferred.
